ConCarolinas 2012 Blood Drive

Happy New Year everyone! 2011 is gone and it time to start looking forward to ConCarolinas 2012. And with that to also start planning for the 2012 ConCarolinas Blood Drive.

We did great for our first blood drive last year, we had over 50 people come out to donate and we collected 36 usable units of blood. That will help to save the lives of up to 108 people! So a big THANK YOU to everyone that helped to make our first blood a success.

I am getting recruiting started a little early this time around as we are trying to make this drive bigger and better than the last. Now there will be a few things that are going to be different this time around. First, I know for our drive this year we had an issue with the day the drive was going to be held and it ended up being changed to Friday. For 2012 the drive is going to be on Saturday, June 2nd from 11am to 1:30pm. With the drive being on Saturday we are hoping to get a bigger turnout. Also, we did have some issues with people who, after checking in, had to wait for their number to be called. Some of these waits were 15 minutes or more. What we are going to do this time around is when you check in, give them your cell phone number. We will try to let you know how long the wait is. If it is going to be a lengthy wait then you can go and check out the con and when your number gets called we will call you to let you know they are ready for you. We tried doing this part of the way through the drive last year and it was fairly successful.

And, we are also going to be having another raffle. Everyone that presents to donate will get a raffle ticket and at the end of the drive tickets will be drawn. There will be several prizes but our big prize for this year will be a brand new XBOX 360!

So if anyone would like to sign up to donate please email your name, phone number and email address to me at TuskenFan@gmail.com and I will get you on the list. Thanks!

CONCAROLINAS ANNOUNCES JEFFREY COMBS AS 2012 MEDIA GUEST OF HONOR

Fans of the Star Trek franchise will immediately recognize Jeffrey Combs as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Weyoun. But there is more to Jeffrey Combs than just his role as Weyoun. Jeffrey has over 50 feature films and countless television appearances including his role as Kevin Burkoff in the popular series The 4400. He is well known for his voiceover work in Transformers, Spiderman, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Justice League.

Few actors living today are truly icons. Jeffrey Combs is that rare breed of actor who has secured himself a spot in film history. Many claim him as the modern day Vincent Price. Bursting into the public consciousness with his riveting performance as Herbert West in the cult classic Re-Animator, over the years Jeffrey has carved out an enviable niche for himself as a true original.

Jeffrey, a native of the Central Coast region of California, spent years nurturing and honing his craft by attending acclaimed schools and working in regional theatre before pursuing film and television. He received his training at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts and the Actor’s Training Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. He spent years in regional theatre performing at such notable venues as the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, Arizona Theatre Company in Tucson, AZ, the California Shakespearean Company, the Mark Taper Forum and South Coast Repertory where, in 1983, he won an LA Drama Critics Award.

ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre, multi-media convention. It is called a sci-fi convention but in truth it covers all speculative fiction - science fiction, fantasy and horror. ConCarolinas hosts a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like Klingon Karaoke, charity auction, SCA events, fan groups like the 501st Stormtroopers, Starfleet, and Klingon Assault Group, as well as something new and different every year.

ConCarolinas on Stephen Cobb's PodCast

From Stephen Euin Cobb:

My podcast this week is dedicated to ConCarolinas.

Recorded entirely at the con, it contains nine short interviews with eleven different people. In order they are:

David H. Lawrence XVII (of the TV show Heroes), Addy Miller (an eleven year old actress who played the young Dakota Fanning in the movie The Secret Life of Bees, and played the "Little Girl Zombie" on the new TV series The Walking Dead), Nigel Sade (the professional artist in the art room who was dressed as a pirate), Culio Defavio, Johannes Presley and John Martin (who were at the ConCarolinas Scavenger Hunt table), Scott Messer and Jason "Spanky" Davis (of Empire Games), Djinn the Nytechylde (the beautiful african-american costumer dressed as a drow--a dark elf--in bikini armor), Warren Buff (of Illogicon) and Yair Goldberg (of StellarCon).

If you're ready to relive a bit of the con or want to share ConCarolinas with friends who didn't get to attend, feel free to give it a listen or to send someone this link.

Thanks.
Steve

ConCarolinas 2011 - A Resounding Success!

ConCarolinas 2011 was an amazing success. We would like ot thank everyone for coming out. Here are some comments from our committee.

I want to thank you all for attending this year :) You are why we do this :).
Frank Parker, Vice Chair 2011

I just wanted to officially thank the ConCom for all the support you gave to the filk track this year. We had all the space and technical support we needed before we asked for it. Carla, our filk GoH, has written a very complimentary review on Live Journal. I intend to put in a lot more time preparing for next year to help make ConCarolinas well known as a filk friendly convention. Thanks again!
Larry Kirby, Filk Coordinator

From the Guest Services Director, thanks to all the wonderful guests we had this year! You help make our con great! Thanks to all the people who helped me out in the Guest Services room, providing rides to/from the airport, taking care of our guests, etc. - Trey Aloysius Krieger, Kiwi John Kane, Luis Diaz, Dawson Berry, Larry Kirby, Moogie Carolyn Peters...
Stephanie McClung
Guest Services Director

I can tell you that I am one tired con chair but thanks to all our staff, volunteers GMs, and guests for a great con. We proved that despite a crappy economy that we can survive. Still trying to recover but I wanted to thank everyone. I had a great time!
Ron McClung
Con Chair

As gaming coordinator as well, I should also make special mention to all those people that helped out at gaming registration - Alisa K Hylton, Joe Creech, Heath Medlin, Phillip Nite Morrison, and the great people of Scarab Gaming Convention. Gaming Registration went smoother than in the past, and I could not have done it without them. Thanks. Gaming was a huge success.Ron McClung
Gaming Coordinator

The final count is around 1335, which turns out to be more than 2010, so we are still growing. With the high gas prices and sluggish economy, that an accomplishment. More Con Reports to come but we just wanted to thank everyone for their support.
