Read it. Do it. Survive it. 4-1-1 provides an opportunity for the citizens of Cabarrus, Rowan, Union and Stanly counties to read and discuss a single book together. The program brings together partners across the four counties to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. We are proud to announce that "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins will be the title of our next community read in fall 2012. We are planning big things with the help of the libraries, parks, and community colleges in each of the counties.

Mandalorian Mercs

Costuming Fan Group

The Mandalorian Mercs began life as the brainchild of Tom Hutchens in March 2007. Noticing that Mandalorian costumers had distinctive and separate needs to "traditional" costuming groups, and being a big fan, Tom decided to create a costume group based on Mandalorian culture.

Utilizing a guild name from Star Wars: Galaxies and references from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic computer games, the Mandalorian Mercs as a costume organization was born.

The infrastructure of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club is based on all known references to Mandalorian Culture in Star Wars Expanded Universe canon. The cultural leader, or Mand’alor (Mandalore), is the public figurehead with a ruling and advisory council used to debate and guide the club’s direction and finally the "command" staff, the leaders who help guide the Mercs at a local level.

This makes the Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club unique as it is based on methodology and ideology as opposed to visual accuracies based on the Star Wars films. The Mercs are an inclusive and friendly club, following the Mandalorian way of "Clans" or family units and a clans’ ability to adopt anyone who wishes to be a Mandalorian.

During the formation of the club, Tom began uniting Mandalorian costumers in the USA and UK; the regions were given names using the Mandalorian language developed by Karen Traviss. Talon Clan became the first Mandalorian Mercs clan in April 2007, shortly followed by Falco, Sun Raider and Storm Raider clans. The UK Vok’Chi Clan was founded in late 2007.

From humble beginnings the club has grown from five to thirty-eight clans, spanning several countries with over four hundred members as well as several hundred prospective members from new countries, including Australia and Japan.

The Mandalorian Mercs, in true homage to the characters they portray, have changed and adapted over the years to support the growing amounts of people interested in Mandalorian costuming. In 2008 the Mercs introduced smaller squads to allow people to better serve the communities in their region, with facilities to grow into bigger clan units.

The Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club set the standards of Mandalorian costuming based on canon movie references (Boba and Jango Fett) as well as canonical comic-book references, book references (Karen Traviss) and Computer games.

Our CRLs allow us to be more open with approvals, however, even though there is a minimum standard that can be reached; every Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club member is constantly encouraged to improve their costume to elite standards.

The Mandalorian Mercs has grown to become a truly global club that entertains Star Wars fans, promote the creation of costumes, and raises money for charities world-wide.

Maquis Forces International

Costuming Fan Group

Maquis Forces International is an alliance of Maquis clubs and individuals around the worldfor the purpose of the free exchange of ideas, information, and friendship. Like our fictional counterparts on Star Trek who went renegade from Starfleet, most of our membership left established fandom organizations in search of a better banner to fly under. Our chapters left such organizations feeling dissatisfied and not all together comfortable with the politics and infighting that plague many fan organizations. Maquis Forces International is much different. Being Maquis gives us the freedom to act and play as we choose without an organization dictating how we run our chapters and eliminates the need for politics. MFI is a breed apart from the standard cookie cutter Star Trek organization in that we are here for fellowship and fun rather than politics and money.

Our organization is made up of a Coordinator Council, the cornerstone for an alliance of decentralized chapters across the world. The Council oversees the Zone Coordinators, who in turn oversee the individual chapters. Although this may seem like a "chain of command", the Council and the Zone Coordinators are merely for guidance and cohesion. Chapters can take what they desire or nothing at all from them. Minimal requirements for chapters are that they stay true to the standards of conduct set by the membership and to have fun being maquis. Like the "real" Maquis on Star Trek®, maquis chapters are independent of each other, but bound by a common goal. Ours is not as lofty as the freedom of the colonies of the Demilitarized Zone, ours is more down to earth, literally. Our goal is to have fun and the spreading of fellowship and friendship to all Maquis and other Star Trek fan clubs.

The current flagship chapter of the Maquis is the MFS Liberty.

Save Our Seeker

Fan Media Group

Legend of the Seeker is a fantasy TV show, based on author Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" book series. Produced by Disney-ABC, the show aired as first-run syndication. With little to no promotion, and an erratic airing schedule, the show has averaged 2.5 million viewers weekly, plus boasts a rapidly growing international fanbase. For more information on the show, please visit the official website.

Though no official statement has been made, on April 26th 2010, Ausiello reported that the show would be cancelled since Tribune/WGN America had not purchased distribution for season 3.

The "Save Our Seeker" campaign aims to promote the show by demonstrating the unity and strength of its fanbase. After its first project, two ads on Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter in mid 2010, the SOS.com Project Group continued to coordinate multiple campaigns: organizing fan presence at genre conventions, DVD Library Drives for Season 1 and Season 2, exploring more advertisement opportunities and offering collectibles through contests and auctions to aid in fundraising.

With the added motivation brought on by endorsements from Terry Goodkind, Bridget Regan, Craig Horner, Craig Parker, Dayna Porter Chiplin and Bruce Spence, the group has managed and continues to manage several projects in an effort to make a Season 3 for Legend of the Seeker a reality.

The Blibbering Humdingers

Music/Performance Group

The Blibbering Humdingers (aka "the Dingers" or "the Humdingers" "the BH") are a husband/wife wizard rock duo from Cary, NC. They play mostly comedic songs about Harry Potter and the wizarding world created by J. K. Rowling.

Scott & Kirsten Vaughan got their start doing wizard rock in 2007. Whilst searching the web for Potter-filks to perform for an upcoming show, they discovered Draco & the Malfoys. Shortly thereafter they attended a Harry & the Potters show at a local library. After the Death Hallows book release that summer, they decided to try their hand at writing some of their own songs. With the online release of "Voldemort Made Me Crap My Pants" the Humdingers were born.

Since then they've played numerous local shows in central NC with the Moaning Myrtels, the Butterbeer Experience, The Whomping Willows, Gred & Forge, Hawthorn & Holly, Tonks & the Aurors, Bella & LeStrangers, and many other touring wizard rock bands. They've performed at various conventions including Portus, Con Carolinas, Leaky Con, Infinitus, RavenCon, and even mainstage at Wrockstock 2010, and 2011. Their songs have been featured on a variety of charity compliations including Sirisuly Smiling and Jingle Spells 3.

They perform in a wide range of musical styles from old-timey, to 50s do-wop, to 80s new-wave, to straight rock. Most of their songs have a comedic bent, poking fun at characters or situations in he HP books and movies, or turning seemingly innocent situations into lewd ones.

They regularly host wizard rock shows in central North Carolina, often in their home in Cary. They have been know to borrow members of Hawthorn & Holly and Gred & Forge for backing vocals, electirc bass, and percussion.

Vile Pirates Productions

Other LARP

Vile Pirate Productions is just three folks near Raleigh who spend a lot of time writing LARPs mostly for Technicon.

Rob ("The Vile One") is a long-time LARPer. In fact, he's the only member of the team who's ever played in a LARP.

Janet ("Jynx") is Rob's wife and provides the "that's just too complicated" perspective that keeps Rob in line.

Beth(ie) is the crazy friend who drives down from Wake Forest every week to write plots. She and Janet are big fans of Puzzle Pirates from which "Vile Pirate" emerged.

In 2004, Technicon didn't have a LARP and so the three of them decided to run one in 2005. Heart of Arcadia was a huge success (just read their press releases) but after a year of working on it, the team was ready for a break. That lasted until they'd been in the car about twenty minutes and somebody suggested a Victorian-themed LARP, and so was born, in 2006, The Flight of the Daedalus. On the way up to Technicon in 2006, the team developed the pitch for the 2007 LARP: Space Pirates (because, hey, what could go wrong?) By this time, they knew they were hooked.

And the rest is infamy.
